European Parliament

Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmerman (Renew Europe, Germany) will serve as the Chair of Parliament’s Subcommittee on Security and Defence for the next two and a half years.

Following her election by subcommittee members by acclamation on Tuesday, Ms Strack-Zimmerman said: “Conflicts in our neighbourhood and changing geopolitical tides mean we need a step change in European security so we can take our destiny into our own hands. As Chairwoman of the German Bundestag, it became increasingly clear to me that we can only find answers to the major security policy challenges facing our continent today by working together. As Chair of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence, I will endeavour to find common European solutions to new and existing security challenges. Europe’s security and defence is an absolute priority for Renew Europe. I would like to thank my fellow committee members for their trust.”

MEPs also elected Christophe Gomart (EPP, France) as the Subcommittee’s First Vice-Chair, with Mihai Tudose (S&D, Romania), Alberico Gambino (ECR, Italy) and Riho Terras (EPP, Estonia) chosen to serve as Second-, Third- and Fourth Vice-Chair respectively. Together with Ms Strack-Zimmerman, they form the subcommittee’s bureau.
