A delegation from the Economic and Monetary affairs committee has just concluded a mission to Washington D.C. at the end of which Aurore Lalucq, the committee's Chair, said the following:
"Every year, members of the Economic and Monetary Affairs committee visit Washington D.C. – a visit that is key to the transatlatic relation, as it enables exchanges on economic and financial issues, and allows us to raise concerns that may be heightened in uncertain times.
Over the past days, we have held extensive exchanges with U.S. policymakers, regulators, legislators, international organisations and market participants on the major issues shaping our economies, from the global economic outlook and banking supervision to digital finance and, of course, artificial intelligence.
Our discussions with a range of stakeholders pointed to an emerging consensus: several interlocutors raised concerns about a growing trend towards de-supervision among U.S. public authorities. Many stakeholders also voiced concerns over cryptoassets, stablecoins, and the ongoing reduction in supervisory oversight in the US.
In addition to these timely and critical issues, members of the European parliament also raised a number of questions on inflation, as well as on migration and tariff policy, and their impact on American economic growth, that remained unanswered.
For the European Parliament, this mission also reaffirmed our commitment to advancing Europe's own agenda. Completing the Savings and Investments Union and the Banking Union, strengthening capital markets, and ensuring that innovation develops within a robust regulatory framework remain essential to Europe's competitiveness."
