Civil Liberties Committee MEPs will visit London for a series of meetings on justice and home affairs topics including digital safety, data protection and law enforcement cooperation.

During their visit to London on 3 to 5 June, MEPs from the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs led by Committee Chair Javier Zarzalejos (EPP, Spain) will meet with UK policymakers, civil servants, NGOs and academic experts to discuss current issues and key themes for EU-UK cooperation.

To discuss online safety and digital well‑being, MEPs will meet with the House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee, chaired by Dame Caroline Dinenage MP, and the Science, Innovation and Technology Committee, chaired by Dame Chi Onwurah MP. Discussions will cover the practicalities of age‑verification mechanisms and broader issues concerning the digital well‑being of children. In a meeting with the Information Commissioner’s Office, MEPs and Deputy Commissioner Emily  Keaney will discuss the UK Data Act, the 2025 EU adequacy decisions on GDPR data transfers, and law enforcement data use.

The delegation will also address law enforcement and judicial cooperation, starting with a meeting with the House of Commons Committee on Home Affairs. Here the discussion will focus on policing collaboration, data access for investigations, evidence exchange, prisoner transfer and the prosecution of gender‑based violence crimes. At the House of Lords, MEPs will meet members of the European Affairs Committee, including Committee Chair Lord Stirrup, and the Justice and Home Affairs Committee, chaired by Lord Foster of Bath, to discuss EU‑UK justice and home affairs cooperation more broadly.

Finally, the visit will seek to contribute to the fight against gender-based violence and child sexual abuse. MEPs will meet Catherine Atkinson MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Victims and Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls at the Ministry of Justice and hear from NGOs and academics on the UK’s consent‑based rape law. The delegation will participate in a round‑table that brings together child‑protection NGOs and tech‑industry bodies to discuss online safety and combatting CSA. MEPs will conclude their visit with a discussion on artificial intelligence with Professor Jason McEwen at the Alan Turing Institute.
